UHRMX - Upcoming Remixing Course detail.
Remixing is a very important part of the modern musical landscape - tracks can become hits on the strength of their supporting remixes. With this in mind, UH Recordings have teamed up with the University of Hertfordshire to deliver a brand-new, up-to-date, and fully modular online course in Remixing from start to finish.
Whether you are a recent arrival to the music technology arena, or a seasoned user who wants to find out more, you will get a lot out of this course. If you complete all 10 units you will also be eligible for a PG Certificate qualification.
The course will be led by Bruce Aisher, who is a professional remixer, technology journalist and Programme Tutor for the MSc Music & Sound Technology course at UH, and there will also be contributions from well know artists, DJ’s, producers, technologists and other industry professionals.
Unit 01 - “Remixing 101 – An introduction to remix technology”
What is a remix and why is it relevant to today’s fast-paced music business? What makes a great remix?
As well as answering these questions, we’ll take you through a brief history of the remix and why it is so important on a global level. You will discover that remixes aren’t just important to niche orientated dance music styles, but across a wide range of varied genres.
Taking basic audio and MIDI files as a starting point you’ll be introduced as to how these can be tweaked and twisted in order to arrive at something new, original and exciting - the perfect remix.
Unit 02 - “Principals of sequencing for remixes”
To produce a great remix you need to understand the basic building-blocks of a good track - rhythm, melody, harmony, and of course the production tricks and techniques that tie it all together. How can these be manipulated to make something different? Which elements should you keep and which should you dump? How far should you stray from the original? What style is the remix? Who is the audience? Where will it be played?
This unit aims to address all of these issues and more, setting you on the path to building a successful remix whatever the style.
Unit 03 - “Synths and samplers – Software and hardware instruments”
Here you’ll get to grips with all the sound-generating tools of the trade - with a particular focus on up-to-the minute production ideas from a wide range of recent remixes. You will understand how to chose, use (and abuse) a range of synthesizers and samplers in the pursuit of the right sounds for the right job. This should arm you with a fuller understanding of the tools and give you the edge in the production and originality stakes.
Unit 04 - “Working with loops – Audio editing, tempo, time stretching and chopping up a beat”
Loops and samples have always been important in the world of the remix. Here you’ll delve deeper into the realm of audio editing, and explore the essential techniques of tempo manipulation and time stretching - very important if you want to restyle and remix any track. You will also learn how to create new and original material by chopping and changing the elements of a loop, with the aim of giving you a head-start in the remix production world.
Unit 05 - “Hard beats and heavy bass lines – building a solid foundation to your track”
The core of any great remix is its rhythmic base. In this unit you will explore the concepts behind building a solid foundation toy your track by using the right type of bass line and combining it with the perfect beat. You will also discover how selecting the right sound and using particular production techniques can maximise the effect your remix will have .....
Unit 06 - “Vocal Production – Editing, FX and processing”
Some of the most tricky yet important remix production tips revolve around the creative manipulation and use of vocals. This unit will introduce you to a full range of useful and important techniques for editing vocals (including the use of pitch manipulation and correction tools), and demonstrate how to apply effects processing to add a professional sheen to your vocal elements.
Unit 07 - “Build ups and breakdowns – Structuring a club track”
Any remix can succeed or fail on the basis of its structure - if it doesn’t flow in the right way then it won’t get played - and even simple ideas can be turned into dancefloor gold with a well considered arrangement. You will be encouraged to look at how commercially released material is arranged in order to ensure the combined elements are presented to the best commercial effect.
Unit 08 - “Maximising for the club – Mastering for the biggest impact”
The final stage in ensuring that your remix succeeds in the cut-throat club world - and with so many tracks vying for attention in this global market - is the successful application of mixing and mastering techniques in order to ensure maximum impact on your remix’s first and every listen. This unit aims to demonstrate how individual elements can be sympathetically mixed to maximise their sonic impact and will also explore the mastering techniques available in preparation for a commercial release.
Unit 09 - “Commercial focus – know your market”
Having a fantastically produced remix is only part of the process - you also need to know how to get it played and how you might get paid. This unit provides the framework for you to explore the commercial outlets for your remixed product, arm yourself with the right commercial tools, and decide on a plan of attack.
Unit 10 - “Remixing in practice - Workshop Event”
Remix production can be a solitary business, and meeting like-minded producers is useful way to share tips, tricks and experiences. With this in mind this unit centres around a 1-day group workshop event where you will get to discuss and analyse your own and others work and meet remix professionals. You will find out about the life of a jobbing remix producer, and listen to a wide range of remixes in the fully equipped SSL studio at the University of Hertfordshire.
