Taina Niemelä

Pianist

Taina Niemelä started playing the piano at the age of seven in Ivalo, in Finnish Lapland, studying music professionally at Oulu and Tampere Conservatoires, and later with Richard McMahon at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. Taina’s debut as a concerto soloist was a performance of Rautavaara’s Piano Concerto No.1.

Taina was recently chosen among the finalists of the British Contemporary Pianist of the Year competition. Taina’s speciality repertoire is music of 20th and 21st Century music; she is currently exploring the possibilities of free-improvisation, involving in particular the integration of piano and electronics, and various cross-media application.
