Howard Burrell - New commission for deHavilland Philharmonic
23/09/2009
Howard Burrell's "Anniversary" will be given its first performance on Sunday 11th October 2009 by the deHavilland Philharmonic Orchestra to mark the 40 Anniversary of the Hatfield Philharmonic Society.
The Orchestra (originally called the Hatfield Philharmonic) was founded in 1969 by Sir Norman Lindop with conductor Frank Shipway who conducted the Orchestra until 1977 when Howard took over, eventually retiring in December 2003.
Robin Browning now wealds the baton and will conduct this first performance in a concert that also includes the overture "Der Freischutz" (Weber) the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto (soloist Florian Rago) and Brahms' Symphony No 3.
The full title of Howard's new work is "Anniversary Fanfare, Variations and Finale".
The Fanfare utilises the notes contained in the name deHavilland which the brass parade ubiquitously throughout, then each of the three sections (woodwind, brass and strings - the only percussion is the timpani and we hear enough of them without a variation!) has its own variation and the piece concludes with a jolly coda (finale).
The concert takes place in the Weston Auditorium on the deHavilland Campus Hatfield of the University of Hertfordshire and commences at 19.30.
