Overview
Improvised music, The Harvard Dictionary of Music tells us is: “The creation of music in the course of performance” and this recording by Bell, Filoseta and Hallett features three of the most accomplished artists of this genre. As a look at the instruments employed in these performances (eg shakuhachi, khene, Cretian pipes et cetera) it suggests that this is not necessarily an invention of western music.
For reasons which I don’t understand at all, many people hold the view that improvised music is “not nice”. Or that they do not like it but in truth have never tried it or experienced it. This is all rather strange as improvisation is not new. It has been the core of Indian music, used in the gamelan music of Java and Bali and of course an essential element in the establishment and development of jazz, to identify a little of its background.
Acoustic Dream takes us into a world where consciousness is suspended and the music is allowed full rein to follow its own invariably gentle path. Unlike most recordings then, this music had to be recorded “as it happened” so to speak. No retakes or editing, this is realtime!
Press quote
"Through various manipulations Bell, Filosetta and Hallet successfully tap into forgotten worlds and the subconscious to communicate with musical voices that have since passed into memory but still evoke a powerful presence"
The Wire Magazine, June 2008
Profile
Roberto Filoseta
Roberto Filoseta (PhD) is a composer and performer, and is currently a Senior Lecturer at the University of Hertfordshire, School of Creative Arts. His compositions explore the expressive possibilities and latent theatricality of live musical performance, resulting in music-theatre works in which musical gesture and theatrical action and space are configured as an interactive whole.
Roberto is also active as a performer of both written and improvised music, using piano, electronics, percussion, sonorous sculptures and other unconventional instruments, as well as body movement. He has played with some fine exponents of the ‘free improvisation’ circle, including: Eddie Prèvost, Trevor Taylor, Paul Dunmall, Gary Smith, Pat Thomas, Jonathan Impett, Clive Bell and Sylvia Hallett.
